Hungary proposes Sodium Chlorite to be classified as mutagenic 2

On January 20, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from Hungary to classify Sodium Chlorite as Mutagenic 2. The proposal is open for comments until March 21 2025.

What’s new?

On January 20 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from Hungary for a new harmonised classification and labelling for Sodium Chlorite (CAS 7758-19-2), including a classification as Mutagenic 2 and a code H341 (Suspected of causing genetic defects).

The proposal also includes the following classifications:

  • Acute Toxicity 2, fatal in contact with skin
  • Acute Toxicity 3, toxic if swallowed
  • Eye Damage 1, causes serious eye damage
  • Skin Irritant 2, causes skin irritation

Sodium Chlorite is used in cosmetic products as an oxidising agent and in oral care and is not currently restricted in the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

What now?

The proposal is open for comments until March 21 2025.

SCCS Preliminary Opinion on Sodium Bromothymol Blue (C186) as hair dyeing

Following the request from the EU Commission for a scientific opinion on the hair dye Sodium Bromothymol Blue (C186), on October 2022 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) issued a preliminary opinion. In light of the data provided, when used in non-oxidative hair colouring products up to a maximum on-head concentration of 0.5%, the SCCS is of the opinion that the complete safety of Sodium Bromothymol Blue could not be assessed.

The Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/692 includes new or updated classification for 12 chemicals that may be used as cosmetic ingredients. Seven out of these 12 are now classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (CMR) and are banned from cosmetic products marketed in the EU.
