France proposes Resorcinol to be classified as an endocrine disruptor for human health

On January 20, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from France to classify Resorcinol as Endocrine Disruptor for human health. The proposal is open for comments until March 21 2025.

What’s new?

On January 20, 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from France for a new harmonised classification and labelling for Resorcinol (CAS 108-46-3), including a classification as Endocrine Disruptor for human health and a code EUH380 (May cause endocrine disruption in humans).

Resorcinol is used in cosmetic products as an antioxidant, denaturant, hair dyeing and perfuming agent and is currently restricted in Annex III/22 to the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

This is the second time that France has submitted a dossier to classify Resorcinol as an endocrine disruptor for human health.

What now?

The proposal is open for comments until March 21 2025.

Following the request from the EU Commission for a scientific opinion on the hair dye Sodium Bromothymol Blue (C186), on October 2022 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) issued a preliminary opinion. In light of the data provided, when used in non-oxidative hair colouring products up to a maximum on-head concentration of 0.5%, the SCCS is of the opinion that the complete safety of Sodium Bromothymol Blue could not be assessed.
