SCCS reviews its opinion on children’s exposure to Methyl Salicylate

On January 20 2025, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) re-assessed children's exposure to Methyl Salicylate. The deadline for comments is set to February 17, 2025.

What’s new?

Following the final opinion published on September 11, 2023, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) re-assessed children’s exposure to Methyl Salicylate.

In light of the new data provided, the SCCS considers the use of Methyl Salicylate as safe in cosmetics intended for children between 0 and 3 years in:

  • Toothpaste up to a maximum concentration of 0.45%
  • Other products up to a maximum concentration of 0.02%

This revision added data regarding children younger than 6 months and ammended Methyl Salicylate’s maximum concentration allowed in toothpastes.

The opinion did not address Methyl Salicylate’s environmental impact.

What now?

The opinion is open for comments until February 17 2025.

From January 2023 the requirements of the law became mandatory, including specific symbols on the packaging or labelling of cosmetic products.

The Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/692 includes new or updated classification for 12 chemicals that may be used as cosmetic ingredients. Seven out of these 12 are now classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction (CMR) and are banned from cosmetic products marketed in the EU.
