What’s new?
On December 16 2024, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from Austria for a new harmonised classification and labelling for Aminomethyl Propanol (CAS 124-68-5), including a classification as Reprotoxic 1B. Aminomethyl Propanol is used in cosmetic products as a buffering agent and is currently restricted in Annex III/61 to the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
Austria has proposed to classify Aminomethyl Propanol as:
- Skin Corr. 1, H314 – Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
- Eye Dam. 1, H318 – Causes serious eye damage.
- Repr. 1B, H360D – May damage the unborn child.
- STOT RE 2, H373 (liver) – May cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure
This is the second time Austria proposes an updated classification for this ingredient.
What now?
The proposal is open for comments until February 14 2025.
