SCCS Final Opinion on new coating for Titanium Dioxide (nano form)
Ingredients: TITANIUM DIOXIDE (NANO)

Date of publication: 25/10/2024

On October 25 2024, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) published the Final Opinion on new coating for Titanium Dioxide (nano).

What’s new?

Based on the information provided, the SCCS believes there are several uncertainties and data gaps that prevent a definitive conclusion regarding the safety of Titanium Dioxide (nano) coated with a combination of 6% Aluminium Hydroxide, 14% Sodium Myristoyl Sarcosinate, and 10% Dimethicone (Eclipse 70).

The information provided has not demonstrated that Titanium Dioxide with the composite coating (Eclipse 70) shares physicochemical characteristics, coating stability, or lack of dermal absorption of nanoparticles with the TiO2 nanomaterials evaluated in the prior SCCS Opinion (SCCS/1516/13 – Revision of April 22, 2014).

Unless these concerns are addressed, further data regarding the physicochemical, toxicological, and exposure aspects specifically related to the nanomaterial under evaluation (Eclipse 70) will be necessary to reach a conclusion on its safety for use in cosmetic products.

This opinion is in line with the preliminary opinion presented on May 27 2024.
