Hexamethylindanopyran may soon be banned from cosmetic products
Ingredient: HEXAMETHYLINDANOPYRAN

Date of publication: 25 March 2026

The Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) of ECHA published its conclusions about a possible CMR classification for Hexamethylindanopyran, following Frances' proposal from 2025.

What’s new?

Hexamethylindanopyran (CAS No 1222-05-5) is an ingredient used in cosmetic products as a fragrance and perfuming agent and is currently restricted in Annex III/336 to the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

On January 2025, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) received a proposal from France for a new harmonised classification and labelling for Hexamethylindanopyran, including a classification as Reprotoxic 1B.

On the 25thof March 2026, the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) concluded that Hexamethylindanopyran shall be classified for Reprotoxicity, as Repr. 1B.

What now?

Following this opinion, a ban on Hexamethylindanopyran in cosmetics in the EU might be enforced, unless a successful exemption application under Article 15 of the EU Cosmetic Products Regulation is submitted.

The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety has issued a final version of the Scientific Opinion on Vitamin A, concluding that exposure to Vitamin A derived from cosmetics can be a concern for higher exposure consumers, and since cosmetics alone do not exceed the upper limit the SCCS cannot suggest maximum concentration limits that take into account contributions from other sources.
