What’s new?
On the 17thof March 2026, Belgium submitted to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) its intention of harmonised classification and labelling (CLH) of Climbazole (CAS No. 38083-17-9), to be classified for endocrine disruption to the environment.
Climbazole is an anti-seborrheic, antimicrobial and preservative agent used in cosmetic products, currently listed in entry 310 of Annex III and entry 32 of Annex V of the Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
What now?
After Belgium submits a dossier containing comprehensive information about Climbazole, its properties, and any available data on its hazards, it will undergo an acceptance check by ECHA. In case the dossier is accepted, data provided to support the Endocrine Disruption classification will undergo an assessment by the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC). The outcome of this assessment might lead to an official classification of Climbazole.
Despite Climbazole’s proposed classification, it can still be used in cosmetic products, since this classification relates to the environment and not human health.
